Nothing the Sun, coming June 12

nothing the sunNothing the Sun will be released on Bandcamp on June 12, 2018.

This date was chosen as it marks the second anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida. Man Walks into a Bar, the second song to be released from the album, was written in the immediate aftermath of that event, and focuses on gun violence in the US.

For a long time, I was unsure of what to do with the song. A demo version sat around on my personal SoundCloud profile, gathering dust and acting as a reminder of my own powerlessness in the face of horror. It was only this year that I considered the possibility of its being more than a sad footnote to an ongoing tragedy.

Early in the year, I hit a lull in my freelance work, and needed to find something to do. I bought myself some (relatively) cheap recording equipment, and set about working out how to use it. After a little while, I had a few lo-fi, acoustic songs recorded, and began to wonder whether I could fit them together as a full album. I had no intention of re-recording Man Walks into a Bar.

But the Parkland shooting of February 14 was dominating the news cycle, as the Pulse shooting had a year and a half earlier, and as countless other shootings have done over the years – bubbling up in the western consciousness, only to bubble down again as soon as something else comes along.

Only this time around, it did feel as though there was a stronger appetite for change. For all the smears against the children who survived the tragedy, all the shouting about constitutional rights and ‘good guys with guns’, it felt as though more and more people were coming out in support of better legislation to protect people from gun violence.

So I thought again.

Man Walks into a Bar is now in the middle of Nothing the Sun, and from the time the album goes on sale on Bandcamp on June 12, I’ll be donating 50% of the profits from online sales to the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, an organisation which advocates for sensible US gun control policies.

Physical copies of Nothing the Sun will cost £10, and MP3s will be sold on a pay-what-you-feel basis – anything over £2.50 is fair game.

Please give whatever you can reasonably afford if you want to hear the album in full.

If you think my music’s crap, you can donate to the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence directly.

If you think America is sorely in need of more guns… Well, we can argue about that if you really want to, but I think the album’s probably not for you.

Thanks for reading. Further updates in due course.
